The first Avatar was a revelation, while opinions diverged on the second installment, which many viewed as an extended advertisement for computer-animated water. Nonetheless, The Way of Water was a hit, paving the way for more films. Now, the title for the third installment has been revealed.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Coming in Late 2025

Avatar: The Way of Water hit cinemas in 2009, astonishing audiences worldwide with the potential of 3D cinema. However, it took more than a decade for the second part to materialize, primarily due to technological constraints. Director James Cameron stated that he couldn’t realize the water world as he envisioned for a long time.

Disney has now unveiled the title of the third film, indicating that after water, fire will play a significant role. The third installment, slated for release next year, will be titled Fire and Ash and is scheduled to hit theatres on December 19, 2025. Significant delays are not expected as Avatar: Fire and Ash has already been filmed concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water. The time until the end of 2025 will likely be used for the extensive computer-generated effects.

No trailer or other visual material for Fire and Ash has been publicly released yet, but Cameron showcased some concept artworks at a Disney event. “You’ll get much more of Pandora than you’ve seen so far. It’s a fantastic adventure and a visual feast, but there are also far more emotions at stake, more than ever before,” Cameron said at the presentation, according to Variety. “We’re venturing into truly challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”

“A Bus Would Have to Hit Me”

The 69-year-old director also gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), where he discussed what’s in store after Fire and Ash, specifically the planned parts 4 and 5. Cameron had previously speculated whether he would continue directing these sequels himself. Now, he’s clear on his stance.

When asked by THR if he would continue directing the Avatar films, his unequivocal response was: “Absolutely. Without a doubt. I mean, they would have to stop me. I have a lot of energy and love what I do. Why wouldn’t I? And by the way, the films are already written. I just re-read both of them last month. They are great stories. They absolutely need to be made. Only if I get hit by a bus and end up in an iron lung will someone else take over.”
